What Is a Knurled Body Rivet Nut?

A knurled body rivet nut is a round blind threaded insert designed to create a strong, reusable internal thread in thin sheet metal, tubing, panels and other materials accessible from only one side.

The fastener has an externally knurled surface that increases friction and mechanical engagement with the mounting hole. This helps reduce rotation and spin-out during screw installation, removal and service.

Knurled body rivet nuts fit standard round mounting holes, making them easier to incorporate into many sheet metal designs than half hex or full hex rivet nuts that require specially formed holes.

Also searched as knurled rivet nuts, round knurled rivet nuts, blind threaded inserts, threaded nut inserts, nutserts or anti-rotation rivet nuts, these fasteners are commonly used where a smooth body rivet nut may not provide sufficient resistance to rotation.

Available Thread Sizes

Knurled body rivet nuts are available in standard UNC, UNF and metric thread sizes. Grip range, mounting hole size and flange availability vary by part number.

Inch Thread Sizes

  • #6-32 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .020–.080 in.
  • #8-32 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .020–.080 in.
  • #10-24 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .020–.130 in.
  • #10-32 UNF Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .020–.130 in.
  • 1/4-20 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .027–.165 in.
  • 5/16-18 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .027–.165 in.
  • 3/8-16 UNC Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: .027–.165 in.

Metric Thread Sizes

  • M4 × 0.7 Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: 0.5–2.0 mm
  • M5 × 0.8 Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: 0.5–3.3 mm
  • M6 × 1.0 Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: 0.7–4.0 mm
  • M8 × 1.25 Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: 0.7–4.0 mm
  • M10 × 1.5 Knurled Body Rivet Nut — Grip Range: 0.7–4.0 mm

Additional grip ranges and custom dimensions may be available for production requirements. Refer to the specification charts above for exact mounting hole sizes and dimensional tolerances.

Knurled Body vs. Smooth Body Rivet Nuts

Both designs fit round mounting holes and can be installed from one side of the material.

A smooth body rivet nut provides an economical solution for general assembly and moderate torque requirements.

A knurled body rivet nut has external serrations that increase engagement with the mounting hole, providing better resistance to rotation and spin-out.

For applications requiring the highest mechanical resistance to rotation, a half hex or full hex body rivet nut installed in a corresponding hexagonal hole may be more appropriate.

Small Flange vs. Large Flange

Small flange knurled rivet nuts provide a lower-profile head with minimal projection above the mounting surface. They are suitable where clearance or appearance is important.

Large flange knurled rivet nuts provide a broader bearing surface on the front of the panel. The larger flange helps distribute load and support the fastener in thin or softer materials.

Flange selection should be based on available surface area, panel material, assembly clearance and load requirements.

Materials & Finishes

Knurled body rivet nuts are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and brass.

Available finish options may include:

  • CR3 white zinc
  • Yellow zinc
  • Black zinc
  • Zinc-nickel
  • Nickel plating
  • Application-specific finishes

Carbon steel provides strong and economical performance for general industrial use. Stainless steel offers greater corrosion resistance, while aluminum provides a lightweight option. Brass may be selected for electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance or material compatibility.

Material and finish availability varies by thread size, flange style, application requirements and production quantity.

Knurled Rivet Nut Installation

Knurled body rivet nuts are installed into a properly sized round mounting hole using a manual, pneumatic, hydraulic or automated rivet nut tool.

The tool engages the internal thread and pulls the threaded section upward. This causes the fastener body to collapse behind the panel and clamp the rivet nut securely against the material.

For reliable installation:

  • Use the recommended round mounting hole size.
  • Confirm that the panel thickness is within the specified grip range.
  • Use the correct mandrel and nosepiece.
  • Keep the rivet nut perpendicular to the mounting surface.
  • Set the tool stroke or installation force for the selected part.
  • Avoid oversized, irregular or damaged mounting holes.
  • Test the installation in the actual application material before production.

Knurling improves rotational resistance but does not compensate for an incorrectly sized mounting hole or insufficient installation force.

Typical Applications

Knurled body rivet nuts are commonly used where reusable internal threads, blind installation and increased resistance to rotation are required.

Typical applications include:

  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Automotive panels and components
  • Electrical cabinets and enclosures
  • HVAC equipment
  • Appliances
  • Electronic equipment
  • Telecommunications equipment
  • Solar mounting systems
  • Furniture manufacturing
  • Machinery and industrial equipment
  • Metal housings and access panels
  • Thin-wall tubing
  • Vibration-prone assemblies
