What Is a Full Hex Body Rivet Nut?
A full hex body rivet nut is a blind-installed threaded insert with a six-sided body running along the full length of the fastener.
The rivet nut is inserted into a properly sized hexagonal mounting hole and installed from one side of the workpiece. During installation, the body collapses behind the panel, creating a mechanical clamp while the hexagonal body remains engaged with the hex hole.
This engagement helps prevent the insert from spinning when the mating bolt is tightened or removed.
Full hex body rivet nuts are also commonly called:
- Full hex rivet nuts
- Hex body rivet nuts
- Hex rivnuts
- Hex nutserts
- Hexagonal threaded inserts
- Anti-spin rivet nuts
- Full hex blind threaded inserts
They are commonly selected when a round body insert may not provide sufficient resistance to rotation.
Available Thread Sizes
Full hex body rivet nuts are available in standard UNC and metric thread sizes.
Inch Thread Sizes
- #8-32 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- #10-24 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- 1/4-20 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- 5/16-18 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- 3/8-16 Full Hex Rivet Nut
Metric Thread Sizes
- M4 × 0.7 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- M5 × 0.8 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- M6 × 1.0 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- M8 × 1.25 Full Hex Rivet Nut
- M10 × 1.5 Full Hex Rivet Nut
The available grip range, mounting hole size, body dimensions and overall length vary by thread size and flange style. Refer to the charts above for exact specifications.
Materials & Finishes
Full hex rivet nuts are available in steel and stainless steel, with aluminum and brass options available for selected custom requirements.
Steel full hex rivet nuts provide strength and economical performance for general industrial, automotive and sheet metal applications. Available finishes include white, yellow or black zinc, zinc-nickel and nickel plating.
Stainless steel full hex rivet nuts provide greater corrosion resistance for applications exposed to moisture, outdoor conditions or demanding industrial environments.
Aluminum full hex rivet nuts offer reduced weight and corrosion resistance for selected applications.
Brass full hex rivet nuts may be produced for applications requiring conductivity, corrosion resistance or material compatibility.
Material and finish availability varies by thread size, grip range and production quantity.
Full Hex vs. Half Hex Rivet Nuts
Both full hex and half hex rivet nuts are designed to resist rotation in a hexagonal mounting hole.
A full hex body rivet nut has a hexagonal profile along the full body. Its thicker body construction and greater hex engagement make it suitable for higher-load and higher-torque applications.
A half hex body rivet nut has a hexagonal section near the flange and a round lower section. It still provides strong anti-rotation performance but may offer a more economical option for applications with lower load requirements.
Choose a full hex body when:
- High resistance to spinning is required.
- The assembly is exposed to high installation torque.
- The application experiences vibration or repeated servicing.
- A thick-wall rivet nut construction is preferred.
- The panel can be manufactured with a controlled hex hole.
Full Hex vs. Round Body Rivet Nuts
Full hex and round body rivet nuts require different mounting holes.
Full hex rivet nuts require a properly sized hexagonal hole. The body mechanically engages the sides of the hole, providing strong resistance to rotation.
Round body rivet nuts install into standard round holes, which are generally easier and less expensive to produce. Knurled round bodies can improve spin resistance, but they do not provide the same positive hex-to-hex engagement.
Choose a full hex rivet nut when anti-rotation performance is a primary requirement. Choose a round body rivet nut when the application only permits a standard round mounting hole.
Full Hex Rivet Nut Installation
Full hex body rivet nuts are blind installed, meaning access is required from only one side of the workpiece.
General installation procedure:
- Prepare a hexagonal hole to the dimensions shown in the specification chart.
- Thread the rivet nut onto the correct installation-tool mandrel.
- Insert the full hex body completely into the mounting hole.
- Activate the tool to collapse the rivet nut body behind the panel.
- Reverse or release the mandrel from the installed insert.
- Confirm that the flange is seated and the insert does not rotate.
For consistent installation:
- Use the specified hex hole dimensions and tolerances.
- Select a rivet nut with a grip range matching the material thickness.
- Use a mandrel and nosepiece that match the internal thread.
- Keep the tool aligned with the insert.
- Set the tool stroke or installation force correctly.
- Test the installation before production.
An oversized, rounded or improperly formed hex hole can reduce anti-rotation performance.
Typical Applications
Full hex body rivet nuts are commonly used in:
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Automotive panels and frames
- Commercial vehicles
- Agricultural equipment
- Electrical enclosures and cabinets
- Industrial machinery
- Structural brackets
- Metal tubing
- Equipment housings
- HVAC equipment
- Transportation assemblies
- High-vibration applications
