What Is a Rivet Nut Stud?

A rivet nut stud is a blind-installed threaded fastener that combines the expanding body of a rivet nut with a pre-installed external threaded stud. It creates a permanent male mounting thread in sheet metal, plastic or composite panels when access is available from only one side.

During installation, the rivet nut body collapses behind the panel and grips the material securely. The external stud remains available for mounting brackets, components, wiring supports and other assemblies without welding or backside hardware.

Rivet nut studs are also commonly called blind threaded studs, pull-up studs, stud rivet nuts, bolt rivet nuts, male rivet nuts or threaded stud inserts.

Available Thread Sizes

Rivet nut studs are available in standard Unified and metric thread sizes. Body style, grip range, stud length and material availability may vary by size and part number.

Inch Thread Sizes

  • 6-32 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 8-32 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 10-24 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 10-32 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 1/4-20 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 5/16-18 Rivet Nut Stud
  • 3/8-16 Rivet Nut Stud

Metric Thread Sizes

  • M4 × 0.7 Rivet Nut Stud
  • M5 × 0.8 Rivet Nut Stud
  • M6 × 1.0 Rivet Nut Stud
  • M8 × 1.25 Rivet Nut Stud
  • M10 × 1.5 Rivet Nut Stud

Refer to the specification charts above for exact mounting hole diameter, grip range, body dimensions and installed stud length.

Body Styles

Rivet nut studs are available with different body configurations to meet installation and performance requirements.

  • Round Body: Suitable for general-purpose blind installation.
  • Knurled Body: Provides additional resistance to rotation in compatible materials.
  • Half Hex Body: Provides enhanced anti-rotation performance when installed in the corresponding mounting-hole configuration.
  • Large Flange: Provides a larger bearing surface on the installation side of the panel.

Body style availability may vary depending on thread size, material, grip range and production quantity.

Materials & Finishes

Rivet nut studs are available in steel, stainless steel, aluminum and brass.

Steel products may be supplied with CR3 white zinc, yellow zinc, black zinc, zinc-nickel or nickel plating. Stainless steel is available for applications requiring greater corrosion resistance, while aluminum and brass may be selected for weight, conductivity or material compatibility requirements.

Material and finish availability varies by size and application.

Rivet Nut Stud Installation

Rivet nut studs are installed from one side of the workpiece using compatible rivet nut installation equipment and the appropriate tooling.

The fastener is inserted into a properly sized mounting hole. Controlled installation force causes the rivet nut body to collapse behind the panel, securing it to the material while leaving the external threaded stud ready for component assembly.

For proper installation:

  • Use the recommended mounting hole size.
  • Confirm the required material thickness and grip range.
  • Use tooling designed for rivet nut studs.
  • Apply controlled installation force.
  • Confirm that the selected body style is compatible with the mounting hole.

Typical Applications

Rivet nut studs are commonly used when a permanent external threaded mounting point is required in thin material or when welding is not practical.

Typical applications include:

  • Automotive panels and components
  • Electrical cabinets and enclosures
  • Industrial machinery
  • Equipment housings
  • Wiring and cable supports
  • HVAC equipment
  • Furniture and display systems
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Plastic and composite panels
  • General industrial assemblies
