What Are Architectural Binding Posts?
Architectural binding posts are two-piece mating fasteners consisting of a female threaded post and a matching male screw. They create a secure through-panel connection while providing a clean, finished appearance on both sides of the assembly.
These fasteners are also commonly known as architectural sex bolts, Chicago screws, binding posts and screws, barrel nuts and screws, or sleeve nuts and mating screws. The female post passes through the material and receives the matching screw from the opposite side.
Unlike standard binding posts commonly used for books or leather goods, architectural binding posts are designed for commercial hardware, doors, panels, railings, displays and other industrial assemblies requiring larger diameters, stronger materials or extended post lengths.
Standard and Long Binding Post Sizes
Architectural binding posts are available in multiple inch thread sizes, post diameters and lengths. Available configurations include extended-length and long binding posts up to 3 inches for thick panels, doors and multi-layer assemblies.
Commonly requested configurations include:
- #8-32 architectural binding posts
- #10-24 and #10-32 binding posts and screws
- #12-24 architectural sex bolts
- 1/4-20 Chicago screws and binding posts
- 5/16-18 architectural fasteners
- 3/8-16 heavy-duty binding posts
- Long binding posts in 2-inch and 3-inch lengths
Post length, body diameter, head dimensions, thread depth and matching screw size vary by configuration. Refer to the specification table above for exact measurements and available combinations.
Materials & Finishes
Architectural binding posts and matching screws are available in:
- Steel
- Brass
- Stainless Steel 18-8
- Stainless Steel 316
Available finishes include chrome, brass and dark bronze. Additional decorative or protective finishes may be available for architectural projects and OEM production.
Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance for commercial, industrial and exterior applications. Brass and decorative finishes are commonly selected when the installed fastener will remain visible as part of the finished assembly.
Material and finish availability may vary by thread size, post length, matching screw and production quantity.
Typical Applications
Architectural binding posts and sex bolts are commonly used where a strong through-panel connection and a clean appearance are required.
Typical applications include:
- Architectural panels and wall systems
- Commercial doors and door hardware
- Kick plates and protective door panels
- Railings and partitions
- Signage and display systems
- Elevator gates and interior panels
- Cabinetry and furniture
- HVAC grilles and ventilation systems
- Glass and decorative panel assemblies
- Industrial equipment and enclosures
Their two-piece design allows components to be removed, serviced or replaced more easily than permanent fastening methods.
How to Install Architectural Binding Posts
Insert the female threaded post through the properly sized mounting hole. Align the matching screw from the opposite side and thread it into the post.
Tighten the screw using the appropriate driver. The knurled barrel helps resist rotation while the fastener is tightened, creating a stable and secure connection.
For proper installation:
- Confirm the required thread size.
- Select a post length suitable for the total material thickness.
- Confirm adequate thread engagement with the matching screw.
- Use the appropriate mounting hole diameter.
- Avoid overtightening decorative or softer materials.
