What Is a Knurled Threaded Insert?
A knurled threaded insert is a type of blind threaded insert or rivet nut used to create a strong, reusable internal thread in thin sheet metal and other materials where tapping is impractical.
The insert is installed from one side of the workpiece using a rivet nut installation tool. As the tool pulls the internal threads, the insert body collapses behind the material and clamps securely against the panel.
The knurled exterior increases contact with the mounting hole, helping resist rotation during assembly and repeated screw installation. Its compact body requires less installation depth than many standard rivet nuts.
These products may also be searched as knurled inserts, knurled rivet nuts, blind threaded inserts, threaded nut inserts or short-body threaded inserts.
Available Thread Sizes
CITA and CITM knurled threaded inserts are available in standard UNC, UNF and metric thread sizes. Grip range, body dimensions and mounting hole requirements vary by size and part number.

Materials & Finishes
CITA and CITM knurled threaded inserts are available in steel and stainless steel.
Steel provides strength and economical performance for general industrial and sheet metal applications. Stainless steel is available for assemblies requiring greater corrosion resistance or material compatibility.
Additional materials, finishes and custom specifications may be available depending on size, application and production quantity.
Knurled Threaded Insert Installation
Knurled threaded inserts are installed from one side of the material using a compatible manual, pneumatic or hydraulic rivet nut tool.
The insert is placed into a properly sized mounting hole. The tool engages the internal thread and collapses the insert body behind the panel, creating a secure mechanical attachment.
For reliable installation:
- Use the recommended mounting hole size.
- Confirm that the material thickness is within the specified grip range.
- Use the correct mandrel and nosepiece for the thread size.
- Keep the insert perpendicular to the mounting surface.
- Set the tool stroke or installation force correctly.
- Avoid oversized or irregular mounting holes.
Installation requirements vary by thread size and part number. Refer to the specification chart before installation.
Typical Applications
Knurled threaded inserts are used where strong reusable threads and one-sided installation are required.
Typical applications include:
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Electrical cabinets and enclosures
- Automotive panels and components
- HVAC equipment
- Appliances
- Electronic equipment
- Telecommunications equipment
- Machinery and industrial assemblies
- Metal housings and access panels
The compact body is especially useful where installation space is limited or where a shorter insert is preferred.
