What Is a Half Hex Body Rivet Nut?
A half hex body rivet nut is a blind threaded insert designed to create a strong, reusable internal thread in thin sheet metal, tubing and other materials accessible from only one side.
The upper portion of the body has a hexagonal shape that fits into a corresponding hexagonal mounting hole. This mechanical engagement prevents the rivet nut from rotating in the panel and provides greater spin-out resistance than a conventional round body rivet nut.
The lower portion of the body is round and collapses behind the material during installation, securing the insert permanently to the panel.
Also searched as a half hex blind rivet nut, semi-hex rivet nut, hex hole rivet nut, anti-rotation rivet nut or half hex threaded insert, this design offers a cost-effective alternative to a full hex body rivet nut when high resistance to rotation is required.
Available Thread Sizes
Half hex body blind rivet nuts are available in standard UNC and metric thread sizes. Grip range, hex hole size and body dimensions vary by part number.

Refer to the specification charts above for the required hexagonal mounting hole size, grip range, body diameter, overall length and head dimensions.
Materials & Finishes
Half hex body rivet nuts are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and brass.
Available finish options may include:
- CR3 white zinc
- Yellow zinc
- Black zinc
- Zinc-nickel
- Nickel plating
- Application-specific finishes
Carbon steel provides strength and economical performance for general industrial assemblies. Stainless steel offers greater corrosion resistance, while aluminum provides a lightweight option. Material and finish availability varies by size and production requirement.
Anti-Rotation Performance
The half hex body is designed to mechanically engage the sides of a hexagonal mounting hole. This provides greater resistance to rotation and spin-out than a round body rivet nut relying only on surface friction or knurling.
Half hex rivet nuts are suitable for assemblies involving:
- Higher installation or service torque
- Repeated screw removal and installation
- Vibration
- Thin sheet metal
- Applications where fastener rotation could damage the assembly
Actual torque, pull-out and push-out performance depends on the rivet nut material, panel material, grip range, hole tolerance and installation settings.
Half Hex Rivet Nut Installation
Half hex body rivet nuts are installed from one side using a compatible manual, pneumatic, hydraulic or automated rivet nut tool.
The fastener is placed into a correctly sized hexagonal mounting hole. The tool engages the internal thread and pulls the body upward, causing the round lower section to collapse behind the panel and clamp the fastener securely in place.
For reliable installation:
- Use a properly sized hexagonal mounting hole.
- Confirm that the panel thickness is within the specified grip range.
- Use the correct mandrel and nosepiece.
- Keep the fastener perpendicular to the panel.
- Set the installation stroke or force for the selected part.
- Test the installation in the actual application material before production.
A round mounting hole should not be substituted when the anti-rotation performance of the half hex body is required.
Typical Applications
Half hex body rivet nuts are commonly specified for industrial assemblies requiring strong resistance to rotation.
Typical applications include:
- Automotive body panels and components
- Commercial vehicles and transportation equipment
- Electrical cabinets and control panels
- Sheet metal enclosures
- HVAC systems
- Appliances
- Industrial machinery
- Metal furniture and equipment panels
- Thin-wall tubing
- High-vibration assemblies
